What makes family business unique?
- The long-term perspective of shareholders
- The company’s culture strength when family’s values are connected to the company’s value.
- The purpose the company serves can be very fulfilling for the shareholders and a valuable resource for new and future generations
What advice would you give to a student entering into the program from a family business?
Don’t succumb to temptation to “make the most use of an opportunity or privilege you have”, nor any pressure to work for the family business. Create means to be aware of what is going on with the business, understand it, and keep in touch with it (nose in, hands out), but go create your own path. An eventual timing to be a part of the company will be clear. Don’t push it. Let things go organically. You should know what version of yourself you can be outside of the family business.
What were your goals coming to Cornell?
To be able to have a 10.000 ft complete view of businesses, from a financial and strategic perspective.
